As the Baby Boomers age and medical care continues to support living longer, the US will soon have a huge number of retirees. Most of them will be spending a third of their lives in this post-work period and most of their portfolios will be largely under-funded. In order to compete for the best employees, companies have traditionally been compelled to offer retirement pensions or 401(k)’s. But currently the number of corporations offering pensions is diminishing, the government is facing a revamp of the social security system, and employees are reluctant to financially plan for their retirement including fully funding their 401(k)’s. A significant financial crisis is developing. Unlike the previous generation of Americans whose retirement period was shorter and generally funded by the company pension and social security, the current workforce needs to be developing a sense of personal responsibility and planning regarding their retirement. Companies who offer the most attractive benefits will be providing retirement planning packages that motivate their employees to think beyond finances to develop a strategy to create the retirement that they want to live. Each employee will have a different vision of their retirement. They may want to consult, travel, volunteer; their options are endless. Their plan will inform them as to what they will personally need when they get to retirement and motivate them to make it happen. In addition to creating the needed finances, including funding their 401(k)’s, they will be more motivated to create the health, relationships, and interests they will want in retirement. They will no longer be repelled by the need to prepare for what used to be termed "the declining years." They will be enthused about preparing for how they want to thrive in the next third of their lives.
