Resistance is a sure sign that growth is occurring. Resistance is most successfully managed when it is anticipated. It is essential that management, employees, staff, and clients, when appropriate, be made aware of impending changes. This information must be accompanied by the opportunity to prepare for how they personally will be impacted, and to understand how the changes fit into the overall company vision. In a perfect world, all goes smoothly. However, whether a change is openly discussed for months or sprung on a company at the last minute, resistance will occur. The question, "What is getting is the way of moving ahead?" brings the company face-to-face with the sources of the resistance. They may be external or internal. External sources are the most straight-forward to address. What technologies, raw materials, and systems are lacking as the company moves through this change? Internal sources of resistance are the most challenging to address. Frequently it is simply a universal belief that status quo is preferable to change. Sometimes it is the perception that what one believes about the viability of the change or how one is personally impacted by the change is of no interest to management. Resistance can eventually be overcome by bullying or bribing, but the cost in employee effectiveness and ultimately employee retention is high. The successful leader skillfully connects with the people and departments that are offering resistance - listening to their concerns and making reasonable adjustments while keeping an eye on the vision. It is essential to see both change and resistance as clear signs that growth is occurring and convey the value of this growth to employees.
Coaching through change prepares management to both anticipate resistance and address it from an offensive stance. Coaching faces the irritation of resistance and the temptation to ignore it, and develops skills to move through it and on to successful change.

Paul, a well-known preacher from Biblical times, wrote, "The good that I would like to do, I don’t do." He was speaking of the universal human condition of personal resistance. Time, responsibilities, and beliefs you have about yourself and others have about you, challenge what you long to accomplish. Whether it is weight loss, a lifestyle shift, or a career change, resistance is what keeps you stuck.
Coaching through resistance explores the messages you hear in your head that get in your way. Although some of these messages may point to experiences from your past, coaching focuses on how they are affecting your present. Through coaching you discover the personal skills to set the resistance aside, to no longer be stuck, and create the life you want to lead.
