By definition, leaders lead and followers follow. But in the real world this is often not the case. Although leaders may be clear about their corporation’s vision , they may simply lack the skills to guide their employees in that direction. It is not uncommon for employees who have been successful to be promoted to managerial roles. Without leadership development, they are left attempting to imitate management they have observed, whether poor or great. Leaders tend to motivate from one of three styles - coercion, incentives, or mutual respect. While each style may produce some level of success, the employee who responds out of fear, or hope of personal gain, pales in commitment and productivity to the employee who has made the company vision their own. The leaders who create an environment of respect build bold and dedicated teams that learn from their failures and celebrate their successes. Great leading includes the following essential skills: self-management, listening for content and meaning, seeing the learning in every situation, and inspiring commitment.
Coaching challenges leaders to take their next personal step toward leadership excellence. It provides a safe forum where they can develop their skills in the context of everyday issues. Each corporate leader who is willing to improve his/her leadership models the importance of leadership development to every level of management.

Whether you are leading your civic association, volunteer group, or family, your ability to lead is crucial to success. Leadership calls for you to have a clear view of the organization’s mission and the path. This clarity of purpose and focus makes you a successful motivator and provides you with clear boundaries. Lack of clearly defined boundaries is the greatest threat to living an effective life. Saying "yes" to everything ultimately destroys enthusiasm and leaves the leader burnt out. In contrast, saying "yes" to the opportunities that allow you to impact the world in the ways that hold personal importance to you makes you a powerful force in those arenas.
The coaching relationship often acts as a "sounding board" for the leader staying on the cutting edge. Leadership style is examined in a supportive environment of learning from both success and failure. Skills are developed and sharpened in the client’s specific life opportunities. You gain the ability to choose and direct the impact of your life.
