Change is often the most dreaded word in business. Yet corporate success is predicated on a willingness to embrace cutting edge technology and systems that adjust to the evolving nature of a thriving company. Mergers and acquisitions threaten the stability of employees, and therefore, the very fabric of the company.
The key to all successful change is understanding and buy-in. Clearly defining the details of the change, why it is necessary, and how it will affect the employees at each level of responsibility is crucial. Inviting input as the implementation of the change is designed and executed will not only lead to the most effective process, but will produce essential buy-in.
Coaching smoothes the transition during both the planning and implementation of change. Coaching while planning clarifies the specific steps and the schedule of the change process. Coaching through the implementation provides accountability, while at the same time quickly identifying what is getting in the way of the change. Resistance offers essential insight to successful change management.

Personal change always begins with a compelling vision. You want to lose weight, or lead a healthy lifestyle, or make a career change, etc. However, too often the familiarity of the status quo wins out over the challenges of change. Failure may breed contempt for the vision or for oneself. But failure itself provides a wealth of information. Failure can show you what is getting in your way and motivate you to develop skills to manage your resistance. Failure also provides the opportunity to see whether the vision is your own or the vision of family, friends, or the culture for you. Failure sometimes challenges you to even change your vision, to make it truly your own.
You see coaching for change every time you watch an athletic coach working with athletes. Primarily the coach believes in the athlete’s ability to improve their game and win. The personal coach brings that same confidence to his/her client. Coaching questions clarify the changes desired. Together the coach and client plan the steps of change, celebrate the successes, and explore the information in the failures. They discover the client’s unique keys to overcoming resistance, and the client wins.
